Why I Love Working with the LGBTQIA+ Community
As an LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist, I feel privileged to support LGBTQIA+ clients and counsellors in a space that is inclusive, validating, and free of judgment. Whether in therapy or supervision, I strive to create a safe environment where people can explore their identity, experiences, and challenges with confidence.
A Space for Authenticity and Affirmation
Many LGBTQIA+ people come to therapy looking for an affirming therapist who truly understands their experiences. Too often, they have faced environments where they feel misunderstood or unseen. My approach to inclusive counselling ensures that clients don’t have to explain or justify who they are. Instead, they are met with warmth, respect, and an opportunity to be fully themselves.
Supporting the Unique Challenges LGBTQIA+ Clients Face
LGBTQIA+ individuals often navigate unique challenges, from societal discrimination to internalised shame and identity exploration. Many also experience difficulties in relationships, mental health struggles like anxiety and depression, or trauma from past experiences of rejection. As an LGBTQIA+ therapist, I help clients process these challenges in a way that is empowering and affirming.
Intersectionality is also a key part of my work. LGBTQIA+ mental health isn’t just about gender identity or sexual orientation—it’s about how these aspects of identity interact with race, disability, neurodivergence, and other lived experiences. Therapy should be a place where all of these intersections are welcomed and explored safely.
Why I Love Supervising LGBTQIA+ Counsellors
I also provide LGBTQIA+ supervision for counsellors who want to work in an affirming and client-centred way. Many LGBTQIA+ therapists have been trained in traditional models that don’t always reflect their lived experience or the needs of their clients. I love supporting them in developing their confidence, working ethically, and bringing their full selves into their practice.
Why This Work Matters to Me
Being an LGBTQIA+ affirming counsellor isn’t just about professional expertise—it aligns with my personal values of inclusivity, authenticity, and social justice. I believe therapy for LGBTQIA+ clients should be a place of safety and self-acceptance, where people don’t have to edit themselves or fit into narrow boxes.
If you’re looking for LGBTQIA+ therapy or affirming supervision, I’d love to support you on your journey.
