Supporting Clients with ADHD: Why I Love This Work
If you’re an adult who’s questioning whether you might have ADHD, or if you’ve recently been diagnosed, welcome. You’re not alone—and you’re absolutely not broken. As a psychotherapist, I feel deeply passionate about supporting clients with ADHD, whether they're at the very beginning of their journey or navigating life after a diagnosis.
Working therapeutically with ADHD clients is something I truly love, not just because of the energy, honesty and creativity that often shines through, but also because I see how misunderstood they have been—and how much strength it’s taken to get to this point.
ADHD in Adults: More Common Than We Think
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is still often associated with fidgety children or hyperactive schoolboys. But for many adults—especially women, their ADHD has gone unnoticed, misdiagnosed, or dismissed entirely for years.
By the time many clients land in therapy, they’ve internalised a lot of shame. They’ve been labelled “lazy”, “too sensitive”, “unreliable” or “too much”. The truth is, they’ve often had to work twice as hard to function in a world that wasn’t built with neurodivergent minds in mind.
A Therapeutic Space That Celebrates Difference
One of the joys of my work is creating a space where ADHD clients can unmask, explore who they are, and begin to understand their nervous system, thinking style, and emotional landscape. Whether you’re ADHD-questioning or navigating a recent diagnosis, therapy can be a powerful place to:
- Reframe past experiences through a neurodivergent-affirming lens
- Explore emotional regulation and sensory sensitivities
- Work with executive functioning challenges like time blindness, memory, and focus
- Untangle internalised ableism and rebuild self-trust
- Make sense of overlapping identities (ADHD and Addictions, for example)
I bring curiosity, compassion and a sense of humour to our work. Together, we can explore how ADHD shows up in your daily life and what actually works for you, rather than trying to squeeze into a mould that doesn’t fit.
Many of the clients I work with have faced years—sometimes decades—of misunderstanding, invalidation, and having to "push through". Supporting them to finally feel seen, supported, and celebrated is a huge privilege.
