Clinical Supervision for Counsellors in Private Practice

Supporting Therapists to Build Confidence, Accreditation and Sustainable Careers

Clinical supervision is an essential part of ethical counselling and psychotherapy practice. At its best, supervision is not only a place to discuss client work, but also a reflective space where therapists can develop confidence, deepen clinical thinking, and build a sustainable long-term career.

In my supervision practice, I specialise in supporting counsellors and psychotherapists who are developing or growing a private practice, particularly those in the early years after qualification. Over time, this work has naturally developed into a niche supporting therapists as they build professional confidence, establish their practice, and work towards professional accreditation.

Having now completed over 1,000 hours of clinical supervision, I work with therapists who want supervision to be thoughtful, collaborative, and grounded in real clinical practice.

Supervision for Therapists Building Private Practice

Private practice can be both rewarding and complex. Alongside clinical work, therapists are often navigating questions around workload, boundaries, finances, professional identity and long-term sustainability.

Supervision provides an important space to reflect on both the clinical and professional aspects of being a therapist.

In supervision we may explore:

  • clinical work with individual clients

  • relational patterns and therapeutic process

  • ethical considerations in private practice

  • developing confidence in clinical judgement

  • managing workload and maintaining professional boundaries

  • preventing burnout and sustaining a long-term therapy career

For many therapists, supervision becomes a place where clinical reflection and professional development meet.

Supervision for Newly Qualified Counsellors

The transition from training to qualified practice is a significant step. Many therapists move from the structure and support of training into a more independent professional role.

During this early stage of a career, supervision can help therapists:

  • consolidate learning from training

  • develop confidence in their clinical work

  • reflect on ethical practice and boundaries

  • manage self-doubt and imposter feelings

  • begin shaping a professional identity as a therapist

Rather than rushing professional development, supervision allows therapists to grow steadily and thoughtfully in their practice.

Support with BACP Accreditation

I also support therapists who are working towards accreditation with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

The accreditation process can feel complex, particularly when therapists are balancing client work and the demands of private practice. Supervision can provide a space to reflect on your development as a practitioner and to think about how your work demonstrates safe, ethical and competent practice.

In supervision we may reflect on:

  • clinical development and professional growth

  • reflective writing and case material

  • ethical decision-making

  • recognising the strengths and experience you already bring to your work

For many therapists, this process becomes an opportunity to recognise just how far their practice has evolved since qualification.

Creating Sustainable Careers in Therapy

One aspect of my supervision work that feels particularly important is supporting therapists who want to build a genuine livelihood from counselling or psychotherapy.

Therapy work can be deeply meaningful, but it also needs to be sustainable. Supervision can help therapists think about how to create a practice that supports both their clients and their own wellbeing over time.

I am particularly mindful of the additional challenges that can arise for therapists from working-class backgrounds, where entering the profession may involve navigating professional spaces that can sometimes feel unfamiliar or financially uncertain.

Supervision can be a place to develop confidence, clarity and a professional voice that feels authentic and grounded.

My Approach to Clinical Supervision

My supervision approach is humanistic, collaborative and reflective. Supervision is not about being told what to do, but about thinking together in a way that supports ethical practice and professional growth.

Supervisees often bring:

  • curiosity about their client work

  • reflections on therapeutic relationships and patterns

  • questions about professional direction

  • thoughts about the development of their private practice

Supervision provides a consistent space to slow down, reflect, and deepen the work over time.

Supervision Testimonial

Working with Gemma at Platinum Psychotherapy has genuinely been a turning point for me. As a therapist in private practice, I was struggling with both the practical and emotional sides of running a business — feeling disorganised, overwhelmed, and honestly losing confidence in myself. I was starting to wonder if I had what it took, and that uncertainty was leaking into everything.

From the off, Gemma helped me get proper systems in place— financially, administratively, and in terms of visibility. Her practical guidance on using directories more efficiently has made a real, tangible difference. New clients have started coming through channels I hadn't fully utilised before, and consultations are being booked in a way that previously felt out of reach.

But beyond the practical, what I value most is how Gemma holds both the professional and the personal. She understands the unique pressures of lone working — the isolation, the self-doubt, the way imposter syndrome can creep in just when things start to go well — and she meets you where you are, without judgement, without making you feel like you should already have it all figured out.

Gemma is refreshingly down to earth and brings a lightness to the work that makes even the harder conversations feel manageable. I never feel afraid to ask anything, or worried about how she might respond. That safety has made all the difference.

What also stands out is the accessibility and structure she offers. Knowing I can reach out via WhatsApp at any time removes so much of the anxiety that comes with being a lone practitioner. Sessions are organised months in advance, which means I always know what's coming — and for anyone managing the financial unpredictability of private practice, that forward planning brings real stability too.

Gemma also consistently upholds BACP professional standards and was invaluable in supporting my accreditation application, giving me confidence that the supervision I'm receiving is both ethically sound and professionally grounded. Gemma also provides tons of resources too and CPD events/seminars that might be of interest.

Since working with her, I have a growing caseload I feel genuinely proud of — and most importantly, I feel like myself again. A competent, capable therapist who deserves to be here. That shift has been the most meaningful thing of all.

I can't recommend Gemma highly enough to any therapist needing grounded, practical, and genuinely caring support. If you're finding private practice harder than you expected, please don't struggle alone — this is exactly what Gemma is here for.
